The New York Giants have had three veterans retire rather than go through the rigors of another training camp (kind of). The Giants’ training camp under second-year head coach Joe Judge is a strict one where both errors of omission and commission are punishable by running laps around the facility…and then some.
New York Giants linebacker Todd Davis’ NFL career came to an end on Tuesday when the seven-year veteran announced he was retiring from the NFL. Davis was inked by the Giants last week as the team was in a pinch at the position with Blake Martinez, Reggie Ragland and others either sidelined or limited at the time.
Davis leaves the NFL with 505 tackles, 23 TFL, three sacks, 15 passes defensed and one interception in 96 career games.
The Giants announced they have activated inside linebacker Blake Martinez and defensive back Joshua Kalu from the reserve/COVI-19 list. Martinez and Kalu were expected to be eased back into the training camp grind and monitored as they work to get their wind back.
With starting middle linebacker Blake Martinez on the COVID-19 list, the New York Giants needed more linebacker depth on the roster. The team announced the signing of veteran LB Todd Davis to the roster on Saturday afternoon, with the expectation that Martinez will come off the COVID-19 list this weekend.
Davis, 28, was a surprising cut by the Denver Broncos as part of the franchise's final roster trimmings earlier this month.
This year's cutdowns featured several notable surprises. Among the moves, Leonard Fournette went from Duval to Tampa, and the Pats' trade for Sanu would prove to be a failure.
Davis led the Broncos in total tackles last year with 134.
NFL teams are getting an early start with cutdown day coming Saturday. That includes some surprising veterans being given pink slips ahead of the start of the 2020 season.
