While the next Winter Olympics are still more than three years away, TSN’s Gord Miller notes that the International Ice Hockey Federation President Dr. Rene Fasel has given the International Olympic Committee four potential options for the 2022 competition.
Hosted a panel discussion in Edmonton today with @IIHFHockey president Dr. Rene Fasel. He told the IOC there are 4 options for hockey in the next Olympics:
— Gord Miller (@GMillerTSN) August 10, 2018
1. Go with NHL players
2. Use the same player pool as 2018
3. Use under 23 players
4. No hockey
All four are on the table
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has suggested previously that he wouldn’t mind going to the Summer Olympics, when it wouldn’t interfere with the regular season. With new CBA talks on the somewhat-near horizon, there’s a decent chance that the Players’ Association looks to make this a collective-bargaining issue once again.
At any rate, while these options are already out there, we’re a long way from knowing whether or not NHL players will be going back to the Olympics in Beijing.
