Boston Bruins sign forward Morgan Geekie to two-year contract
Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Bruins have signed forward Morgan Geekie to a two-year contract, TSN’s Chris Johnston reported Saturday afternoon.

Geekie, 24, collected nine goals and 28 points in 69 games with the Seattle Kraken during the 2022–23 regular season. He added two goals and four points in 13 games with the Kraken in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

According to Johnston, Geekie’s new deal with the Bruins carries a $2 million cap hit. He’ll be eligible to become a restricted free agent when his contract expires in 2025.

Geekie had been set to become a restricted free agent with the Kraken this summer, but the club elected not to tender him a qualifying offer ahead of Friday’s deadline.

The Kraken originally selected Geekie from the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. The six-foot-three center primarily filled a bottom-six role over his two seasons in Seattle and set new career highs in every offensive category last year.

Earlier on Saturday, the Bruins signed forward James van Riemsdyk to a one-year, $1 million deal in the UFA market. Geekie and van Riemsdyk could help fill the voids left by Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno, who were traded to the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this week.

The Hurricanes originally selected Geekie in the third round (No. 67 overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft. The Strathclair, Manitoba product made his NHL debut with Carolina late in the 2019–20 season, scoring three goals in his first two games.

Through 180 games over parts of four NHL seasons with the Hurricanes and Kraken, Geekie has collected 22 goals and 63 points. He’s added two goals and five points in 24 career Stanley Cup Playoff contests.

Conor Geekie, Morgan’s younger brother, was selected in the first round (No. 11 overall) by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2022 NHL Draft.
