Jets OC takes blame for botched Zach Wilson sneak on fourth down

New York Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur says it's "100 percent" his fault that the team ran the wrong play on a crucial fourth down against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 17.

Leading 24-20 with just over two minutes left on the clock, the Jets opted to go for a fourth-and-two deep in Buccaneers territory rather than kick a field goal. While coaches wanted rookie quarterback Zach Wilson to hand the ball off to wide receiver Braxton Berrios on an end-around, Wilson kept the ball on a sneak that was stuffed by the Tampa Bay defense for no gain.

"The total intent was to get Braxton the ball. He was balling, and I failed to get that relayed," LaFleur said Thursday, via ESPN. "Our quarterback did exactly what he was supposed to do in that moment."

According to both LaFleur and head coach Robert Saleh, Wilson was coached to keep the ball in the event that no defender is in the A-gap. The Buccaneers left that gap open and Wilson kept the ball, despite Berrios appearing to have space to easily gain two yards, if not score a touchdown.

While both LaFleur and Saleh said it wasn't the rookie's fault, Wilson said Thursday that no one person deserves all the blame and "everyone could've been better" at communicating in that moment. Following the turnover on downs, Tom Brady led the Buccaneers on a nine-play, 93-yard touchdown drive to win the game.
