Iowa State Picks Up Ivy League Player From the Transfer Portal, Only Their 4th Incoming Transfer
Austin American Statesman-USA TODAY NETWORK

Iowa State may have just added a key addition to their offensive line that was desperately needed. After posting the 73rd ranked offense in yards per game, and 66th in points per game, improving the offense was the top priority coming into the offseason.

Jalen Travis, a 6’7″ 310 lb offensive tackle out of Minneapolis, Minnesota announced that he will be transferring to Iowa State next year. Out of high school Travis was a low rated 3-star prospect, but after four years with Princeton, Travis is increased his stock to a solid 87.59 score according to on3 Sports.

Strengthening the Offense

Iowa State’s defense kept the team in quite a few games last year. In 10 of their 12 regular season games, the Cyclone’s gave up less than 30 points. For many teams, keeping a team under 28 points would mean winning most of the games.

Unfortunately, in too many games the offense struggled, and Iowa State lost four games despite giving up 28 points or less, including a 10-7 loss to Ohio.

The Big 12 is known for high scoring offenses, and for for Iowa State to keep up, they need to load up on offense, particular on the offensive line and Iowa State has been doing just that. Of the 26 total players either signed or transferring in, nine are offensive lineman. Compare that to the eight defensive players total, and it is clear to see that the focus is clearly on the offense, and on the line in particular.

Iowa State Hopes For More Incoming Transfers

Unfortunately, to this point the transfer portal hasn’t been great for the Cyclones who have only had four players commit to the team next year and 14 players outgoing. Their lack of success to this point has resulted in the 77th ranked transfer portal class, coming in behind teams like Charlotte, Memphis, and UNLV.

The Cyclones are targeting many more players, but with more than 55% of the current transfer portal players already having a home, it may be difficult for Iowa State to get to 10 incoming transfers, or at least 10 who can help the team next year.
