Draft guru believes Chiefs should consider trading up for this record-breaking WR

The Kansas City Chiefs need more wide receiver depth, so they should consider trading up in the draft to take a speedy pass-catcher.

The Chiefs have the 32nd pick in the draft. On a Monday episode of ESPN's "First Draft," Mel Kiper Jr. suggested they could move up to select Texas' Xavier Worthy, who broke the 40-yard dash record (4.21 seconds) at the scouting combine.

"Keep an eye on Worthy and how far he drops down and what the Chiefs do in terms of maybe moving up and getting him," Kiper Jr. said.

"Can you imagine if Worthy were there with 4.21 speed?"

The Chiefs have some interest in Worthy. He confirmed K.C. met with him at the combine. Per USA Today's Tyler Dragon, quarterback Patrick Mahomes texted him after he broke the record. Coincidentally, he admitted he would like to play with the two-time MVP.

"In a perfect world, I definitely would want to go to the Chiefs," Worthy told Dragon. "Just the way Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs improvise and use you. They had Tyreek Hill. The way they used him, I feel like that would be a perfect fit for me."

Kansas City signed former first-round pick Marquise "Hollywood" Brown to a one-year, $7M deal in free agency. Drafting a wideout would be a good idea, though, as the Chiefs led the league in drops (44) last season.
In three seasons at Texas, Worthy finished with the sixth-most receptions (197), fourth-most receiving yards (2,755) and third-most TD catches (26) in program history. ESPN's Matt Miller compared him to former Philadelphia Eagles star DeSean Jackson, who played for Chiefs head coach Andy Reid from 2008-12.

"Worthy can be plagued by the occasional drop, but those largely showed up in 2022 (10) and weren't as prevalent in 2023 (five)," wrote Miller. "His lack of size [5-foot-11, 165 pounds] will be a concern, but he's the best pure field-stretcher in the class, catching 12 of his 26 career touchdowns on passes thrown at least 15 yards downfield."

Worthy could be a great fit for the Chiefs. In his latest mock draft, NFL.com's Chad Reuter has K.C. acquiring the 19th overall pick from the Los Angeles Rams to take him.
