49ers waive WR Marqise Lee four days after signing him

The relationship between veteran wide receiver Marqise Lee and the San Francisco 49ers didn't last one entire week.

On Friday, the 49ers confirmed they have waived Lee just four days after agreeing to terms with the 29-year-old who opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lee entered the NFL as a second-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2014 and has accumulated 174 catches for 2,184 yards and eight touchdowns as a pro.

He missed the entire 2018 campaign with a torn ACL he suffered that preseason.

In a corresponding roster move, San Francisco signed receiver Bennie Fowler to a one-year deal. Fowler, who turns 30 years old next month, has recorded 97 receptions for 1,101 yards and six touchdowns across 68 regular-season games since the start of the 2015 campaign. He notched two catches for 11 yards with the New Orleans Saints in 2020 before he underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in October.
