Timberwolves to sign C Greg Monroe for rest of season

The Minnesota Timberwolves have two regular-season games left on their docket and are preparing for a likely appearance in the NBA's Play-In Tournament. It appears that they'll have some extra depth in the frontcourt behind three-time All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns for the stretch run.

Monroe has played in 13 games this season, including three with the Timberwolves from Dec. 27 through Dec. 31, when a bevy of NBA teams were dealing with spikes in positive COVID-19 cases. In a win over the Boston Celtics on Dec. 27, Monroe posted what are still his season-highs in points (11), rebounds (nine) and assists (six).

The big man was selected seventh overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2010 NBA Draft and was named Second-Team All-Rookie after posting 9.4 points and 7.5 rebounds in 27.8 minutes per game across 80 contests as a first-year player. Monroe spent the first five seasons of his career in the "Motor City", registering a career-high 16 points and 3.5 assists per game in the 2012-2013 campaign, while averaging a double-double of 15.9 points and a career-best 10.2 rebounds in his final year with the Pistons in 2014-2015.

The 31-year-old signed with the Milwaukee Bucks in July 2015 and stayed with the team for the next two-plus years, before being traded to the Phoenix Suns in November 2017. Monroe was waived by the Suns in February 2018 after just 20 games, before signing with the Boston Celtics.

A Georgetown product, Monroe played two games with the Celtics and three with the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2018-2019 season, as well as 38 contests with the Toronto Raptors, before spending the last two seasons competing overseas.
