Sam Presti Optimistic About Chet Holmgren Ahead of Rookie Season
USA TODAY Sports

The start of Chet Holmgren’s rookie season is only weeks away, and the Thunder are ready to add a difference-maker.

In Sam Presti’s preseason media availability on Wednesday, he addressed a variety of topics, including the Oklahoma City Thunder’s rookie big man. Holmgren, the second overall pick in 2022, will be the Thunder’s starting center this season and is a key member of the team’s future plans.

With the emergence of young players last season, the Thunder will need to find ways to fit Holmgren into their already-established system. Presti appears to believe in the Thunder’s ability to add Holmgren seamlessly.

“A lot of people are talking about this being Chet’s first season, and it is in one sense,” Presti said. “But it’s really our first season with Chet more than it’s Chet’s first season. And, so, our ability to absorb him in a way that allows him to play efficiently while everybody else can be a part of that as well is one of the strengths of the way that we play stylistically.”

Holmgren fits Oklahoma City’s idea of having players who can create for themselves while playing inside and out. Holmgren’s offensive versatility will be valuable for Oklahoma City, as he can play virtually any role on that end.

Although it would probably be best for others to handle the ball and create for Holmgren, his frame provides mismatches that the Thunder can take advantage of. As a 7-footer who can handle the ball and shoot from deep, Holmgren can make plays that no one else on the team is capable of.

His frame will also be a significant help on defense. Holmgren’s shot-blocking presence and rebounding ability are much-needed additions after the Thunder have spent the past couple of seasons without any traditional bigs. Those abilities will not only help the Thunder force tough shots but also help them finish off possessions.

Of course, talent has never been the concern with Holmgren. After missing the entire 2022-23 season due to injury, Holmgren’s rookie year could be rocky, but the Thunder are willing to take on those challenges.

“He hasn’t played in this type of, this level game, ever, let alone coming off something like that,” Presti said. “I mean, he’s hit all the marks so far, but we’ll have to be just very observant, and we’ll have to, we’re gonna have to improvise a little on that.”

Despite those concerns, Holmgren is one of the top contenders for Rookie of the Year and should be one of the most entertaining young players in the league. Holmgren has the tools to accomplish his and the Thunder’s plans. It will just be up to him to put in the work to reach those goals.

“One thing about him is he’s gonna go hard when he’s playing,” Presti said. “I mean, he’s just a competitor. His mindset is as unique as his game.”
