Zack Wheeler becomes third Phillies pitcher since 1900 with this stat line

Zack Wheeler of the Philadelphia Phillies took the mound on Friday night for his second consecutive game against a National League Central opponent. The results for him on the mound in both of these starts were excellent as he recorded 10 strikeouts in each game and did not walk a single batter. This is just the third time since 1900 that a Phillies pitcher has accomplished this.

The first Phillies pitcher to accomplish this was Curt Schilling from Sept. 15-21 in 1996. During those two games Schilling pitched complete games and allowed one earned run a piece. Cole Hamels was the second pitcher to do it in 2010 during a stretch of games from Aug. 1-7. He tossed seven innings a piece during this stretch and struck out 21 batters.

For Wheeler his two outings came against the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers. His 20 strikeouts came in 13 innings of work. He additionally now has five double-digit-strikeout performances on his resume this season, but until his last two starts he had walked at least one batter in all of the other games.
