Yankees Cut Ties With Ex-Red Sox Slugger After Lackluster Stint In New York
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees experienced the same trials and tribulations as the Boston Red Sox a season ago with a player who possesses all of the tools but has failed to produce at the Major League level.

New York spent the entire season trying to find some quality outfield production to pair with Aaron Judge but never truly found a breakout star. One of the unsuccessful experiments was the acquisition of outfielder Franchy Cordero just hours before Opening Day.

Cordero has been outrighted by the Yankees according to The New York Post's Joel Sherman. He can be claimed by another club or elect free agency, likely the latter.

The 29-year-old made an impressive debut in New York but then regressed back to the norm. On the whole, Cordero hit .188 with eight extra-base hits including six home runs, 13 RBIs and a .689 OPS in 24 games.

Cordero is becoming a classic case of a Four-A player -- someone who mashes in Triple-A but cannot compete in the big leagues. The extremely athletic outfielder hit .288 with 28 extra-base hits including 13 home runs, 61 RBIs and a .879 OPS for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

There is no doubt that someone will take a chance on Cordero this winter, likely on a minor-league deal. That team will not be the Red Sox, as a left-handed hitting outfielder is the last of Boston's needs.

The Red Sox already have Alex Verdugo, Masataka Yoshida, Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu as left-handed hitting outfielders.
