White Sox sign former World Series hero

While Francisco Lindor is still on the New York Mets, the Chicago White Sox now have a Mr. Smile of their own.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported on Thursday that the White Sox have signed veteran outfielder Brett Phillips. The 29-year-old Phillips is getting a minor-league deal from Chicago and will earn $1.2 million if makes the MLB roster, Feinsand adds.

Phillips, a lefty hitter, had his finest moment in the 2020 World Series when he got a walkoff hit for the Tampa Bay Rays to win Game 4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The journeyman has since played for the Baltimore Orioles and (most recently last season) for the Los Angeles Angels.

A career .187 hitter over seven MLB seasons, Phillips obviously has some holes in his game. But he has been very well-liked at every single stop thanks to his positive vibes in the dugout. Phillips also works well as a late-inning defensive replacement and/or pinch runner (with some other spectacular highlights over the years as well).
