The Cleveland Guardians ' biggest free agency signing so far this offseason involved bringing back a familiar face. Austin Hedges is once again on the roster, but his role won't be the same as the last time he suited up for the Guardians.

Hedges was pretty open about what he's expecting his role to be this upcoming season during an interview with MLB.com

“I feel like my role is pretty clear. … All the little things that I feel like I can bring to the team is what I’m going to obsess over every single day. If my name is called to be in the lineup, I’m gonna be working really hard this offseason to be the best baseball player I can be to help us win a division."

One thing that Hedges is specifically looking forward to is mentoring and working with Bo Naylor. Every sign points to Bo being the everyday catcher in 2024 but the 23-year-old still has a lot to learn at the big league level.

That's where Hedges comes in.

That being said, the main priority every day is to help lead the guys and to help Bo. Bo’s one of my favorites I’ve ever played with. At this point in my career, I have a lot to teach, a lot to offer. I feel very confident that with myself, with Sandy [Alomar Jr.], I feel like we can help Bo make some significant strides this year and really be the guy behind the plate for the Guardians for years to come.”

Hedges may not be starting every game like the last time he was in town. However, Having someone with Hedges' experience willingly ready to help and mentor the franchises' next generation can't be understated. He's ready to be an extension of the coaching staff and help this young Guardians roster get back to the postseason.
