Nationals prospect Luis Garcia injured in minor league game

Washington Nationals top prospect Luis Garcia left Triple-A Rochester’s game Tuesday night in Syracuse after suffering a hand injury on a freak play at first base.

Garcia collided with Syracuse Mets first baseman while trying to reach first base on a dribbler down the third base line.

Garcia had his left hand checked out on the field and then left the game. He was replaced at shortstop by Adrian Sanchez.

It’s unfortunate timing for the Nats’ future shortstop. Garcia has been on a tear playing for the Red Wings. In 37 games, Garcia is hitting .331/.387/.576 with eight home runs, 27 RBIs and 15 walks. He also has 35 runs scored, hit five doubles and four triples.

With the Nationals struggling with a 14-31 record and an open spot at shortstop following the Trea Turner trade, Garcia could be called up at any moment.

Garcia was sent down to the minors to get accustomed to playing shortstop every day. The organization will await any news or diagnosis on the injury. If he is forced to miss a significant amount of time, it could go a long way to derailing the Nationals’ plan for Luis Garcia this season.
