Miami Marlins Make Major Announcements Regarding Pair of Young Pitchers
USA TODAY Sports

Miami Marlins' manager Skip Schumaker gave some critical information on Thursday regarding young pitchers Eury Perez and Max Meyer.

The following information was relayed by MLB.com Insider Jon Morosi:

Skip Schumaker shared two key updates on Marlins pitching:

Eury Pérez, 20, will have a to-be-determined innings guideline after throwing ~90 @MLB innings last season.

Max Meyer, 24, is expected to be an option to start this year after undergoing TJ surgery in '22.

Perez made his major league debut last season as one of the best prospects in all of baseball. He went 5-6 with a 3.15 ERA, helping the Marlins make the playoffs as a National League wild card team. He struck out 108 batters in 91.1 innings.

Despite his innings limits, he'll be a big part of what the Marlins do in 2024. They are dealing with the absence of Sandy Alcantara, who is out for the year with Tommy John surgery.

As for Meyer, the 24-year-old was drafted third overall in the 2020 COVID-year draft out of Minnesota.

In two minor league seasons, he's 9-8 overall with a 2.77 ERA. In 58 innings at Triple-A in 2022, he struck out 65 batters. He actually did make a brief cameo at the major league level in 2022 as well, going 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in six innings.

He ended the 2023 season as the No. 67 prospect in all of baseball.

The following comes from a portion of his MLB.com prospect profile:

Meyer's slider wasn't quite as dominant as advertised in his pro debut but returned to wipeout status last year, sitting in the upper 80s with outstanding horizontal action and two-plane depth as well. His fastball added a couple of ticks of velocity, parking at 94-96 mph with riding action, and he has reached double (triple) digits in shorter stints in the past. He also upgraded his feel for his changeup, which is a bit firm in the upper 80s but features good fade and serves as a solid third pitch.
