Mariners designate former All-Star Sergio Romo for assignment, activate Ken Giles

The Seattle Mariners have been busy lately, first extending All-Star outfielder Jesse Winker on a two-year deal Thursday to avoid arbitration and then calling up four-time All-Star outfielder Justin Upton from Triple-A on Friday. The moves haven't led to victories yet, as the M's are currently riding a three-game losing streak and have fallen to 29-39.

On Monday, Seattle made a couple of notable transactions to address its bullpen.

A 15th year-pro in his first season with the Mariners — his seventh team — Romo has posted a 0-0 record with an 8.16 ERA and 1.53 WHIP 14 1/3 innings pitched in 2022. The 39-year-old is probably best known for his days with the San Franciso Giants from 2008 to 2016, during which he won three World Series titles, earned an All-Star nod in 2013 and recorded 84 of his 137 career saves.

If Giles makes it back onto the mound for Seattle, it'll be a long time coming for the former Houston Astros star closer.

Giles missed all of the 2021 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and began the 2022 campaign on the injured list with a right middle finger sprain that he suffered in spring training. He has 115 career saves, including a career-high 34 with Houston in 2017.
