Luis Severino makes awkward mistake during Mets introduction

Pitcher Luis Severino made the jump from the New York Yankees to the crosstown Mets this offseason, but judging by his introductory press conference, his heart may still be in the Bronx.

Severino accidentally referred to his new team as the Yankees during an introductory media availability on Wednesday. He did quickly correct his mistake, though.

“I want to say thank you to David Stearns, the Yankees – ah, sorry, the Mets organization for giving me this opportunity,” Severino said.

Later in the news conference, Severino admitted that he envisioned playing his entire career with the Yankees, though he did praise the Mets for their commitment to winning.

“I was not imagining going to any team. I thought I was going to die a Yankee,” he said.

Obviously, this probably is not what Mets fans were hoping to hear, though points to Severino for his honesty. He grew up a Yankees fan, signed with the team as an amateur free agent in 2011 and had spent his entire career in Pinstripes to date, so his feelings are understandable.

A two-time All-Star, Severino is trying to get his career back on track after a series of injuries. He signed a one-year deal with the Mets in November.
