The St. Louis Cardinals had a glaring need for starting pitching at the trade deadline just over a month ago.
With injuries to Jack Flaherty and Steven Matz, St. Louis needed to act, and president of baseball operations John Mozeliak swung deals to acquire left-handers Jose Quintana and Jordan Montgomery.
Last night, Quintana made the start for the Cards against the Washington Nationals, going five innings and allowing just one run as St. Louis evened up their four-game set with a 4-1 win.
Quintana made a little Cardinals history last night as well, becoming the first Cardinals pitcher since 1912 to have allowed no more than two earned runs in each of his first seven starts with the club.

Quintana Makes Cards History
What a pickup for the Cardinals.
Quintana is a veteran guy who has been around for a little while.
St. Louis acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 1 along with reliever Chris Stratton.
Since being acquired, Quintana has been a godsend for the Cardinals, and he continued his run of success with his new club last night.
Quintana is a guy that the Cardinals should definitely feel comfortable with starting a game in the postseason.
With his five-inning, one-run start last night, he picked up his fifth win of the season and lowered his ERA to 3.41.
Quintana has been the perfect guy to help give St. Louis some much-needed innings coverage, picking up the slack for some of their injured starters.
This is quite an impressive run he’s on and it shows just why the Cardinals picked him up.
He can give you innings and also limit the damage, which is what he did last night.
He’s been a good pickup so far, and he’ll be a key piece for the Cards as they look to secure a division title.
