Former Dodgers Manager in Consideration for AL Rival’s Open Spot
USA TODAY Sports

Old Dodgers' skipper Don Mattingly spent this past season as a bench coach with the Blue Jays before their early playoff exit.

The former LA and Miami manager suffered a quick October with Toronto but could return to a managerial role this offseason thanks to a recent opening.

As Dusty Baker retired from the sport, Houston's vacancy could be filled by Mattingly who has plenty of managerial experience in his past.

Speaking of big names, few are more appealing than Donnie Baseball — and Jackson can give his boss a better Mattingly analysis than most. Mattingly’s .483 managerial winning percentage is not sexy, but most of the setbacks came during a difficult stretch with the Miami Marlins, who endured the untimely death of homegrown ace José Fernández and a subsequent selloff on Mattingly’s watch.

Mattingly saw the first era of the current Dodgers ownership group and fielded some incredible rosters in his short stint in LA.

Consistent regular season winning and playoff shortcomings ran their course however as the Dodgers moved on from Mattingly after the 2015 season.

The 2016 season marked a new beginning for the skipper as he headed a talented Marlins team that season.

Several All-Star players littered the roster but the team unfortunately wouldn't see any of them truly shine until they got traded away to other teams as Miami so often likes to do.

The 2022 season marked Mattingly's final season with the club though he did oversee his ace Sandy Alcantara win the NL Cy Young in his swan song in their dugout.

Houston just came off a 2023 season where they reached the ALCS in their seventh straight season making them quite the attractive destination.

The Astros still boast one of the most talented rosters in baseball despite their playoff loss but Mattingly could be the one to oversee another World Series title for the most hated team in baseball.
