A Little New York Yankees Nostalgia: 25 Years Ago Today
USA TODAY Sports

As the current New York Yankees stumble to a fourth-place record in the American League East, here's a little happy nostalgia for Yankees fans.

Twenty-five years ago Thursday, the Yankees trio of Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Tino Martinez graced the cover of Sports Illustrated.

The Yankees eventually won 114 games, a then-American League record, and won the World Series by beating the San Diego Padres in a sweep.

You can look at the cover below, which was tweeted out by sports media insider Richard Deitsch.

Two of those three (Jeter and Rivera) are members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and were integral to the Yankees great season.

Jeter finished his career with 3,465 career hits, 260 homers and a lifetime .310 batting average. He was a five-time World Series champion (1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2009), a five-time Gold Glove winner, a Rookie of the Year and a 14-time All-Star selection.

As for Rivera, he's the all-time leader in saves with 652. He led the league in saves in three separate seasons, was also a five-time World Series champion, a World Series MVP and a 13-time All-Star.

Both Jeter and Rivera spent their entire careers with the Yankees.

As for Martinez, he played with the Seattle Mariners, Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Rays.

He was a lifetime .271 hitter with 339 homers. He was a two-time All-Star selection, a four-time World Series champion and a winner of the home run derby during All-Star week.
