Playing well is the top priority, but looking cool doing it is also really important for the WVU football program. After much speculation and anticipation, the Mountaineers will indeed wear an all black coal rush uniform at some point this fall.

WVU revealed this news on Thursday night after teasing it earlier in the day. Fans are now left wondering if this new uniform will debut to open the 2024 season against Penn State. West Virginia has played in “Country Roads” uniform combinations the past two years in the Backyard Brawl, both in Pittsburgh and last year’s in Morgantown.

Wearing black uniforms is often a polarizing topic since many fans prefer their Mountaineers to simply stick to the school’s colors of gold and blue. Despite the distain of some, this is not the first time WVU fans have watched a West Virginia team wear black.

The WVU men’s basketball team wore black jerseys during the 2023 Brawl, famously bringing back the black jerseys for the first time in over a decade. The original black jerseys debuted in 2010, a special season for the Mountaineer basketball. The women’s team also wore black jerseys this past season.

WVU director of athletics Wren Baker has openly discussed the idea of a black uniform for the football team in the past, citing his desire to listen to the players and dealing with backlash at this prior stop in North Texas when he incorporated a non green look for the “Mean Green.”

But no matter how anyone may feel about the black uniforms, it’s safe to say WVU fans all just want the team to win as much as possible.
