USA women star Megan Rapinoe was on fire during Tokyo 2020 bronze medal match against Australia, scoring directly from a corner before netting with a stunning volley.

Rapinoe is a polarising character, but only because she’s never been afraid to stand up for what she believes in.

The 2019 Ballon D’Or winner has had a hand in significant forward strides made for the LGBT community and equality in football.

She’s also a quite magnificent footballer – one of the greatest women ever to play the game – and is still performing at her very best even at the age of 36.

Rapinoe proved she still has plenty left in the tank during the Tokyo 2020 bronze medal match against Australia’s women’s team.

She first got herself on the scoresheet by scoring directly from a corner, with her whipped delivery proving too hot to handle for the Australian goalkeeper.

When someone scores directly from the corner flag, the jury’s usually out as to whether it was intentional, so Rapinoe erased any doubts as to her intentions and ability to execute them by netting a stunning volley later in the game.

The contest finished 4-3 in favour of the USA, with Rapinoe adding a bronze medal to the gold she won with her country back in 2012 – a fine achievement.
