Nebraska football injury updates, volleyball sweeps, plus more Cornhuskers news

The Huskers had two players suffer what Rhule called “significant” injuries during the spring game. Blye Hill was one of those players and Rhule told Sipple that Hill, who was in the mix to be a starting corner, should return sometime this fall.

That doesn’t exactly say when, but it tells me that Hill will be on the field for Nebraska football during the 2024 season. However, that won’t be the case for redshirt freshman Demitrius Bell. He also suffered an injury in the spring game. He’s also been dynamic for the Huskers but he will miss the entire 2024 season.

Thankfully, Nebraska has depth at wide receiver, but Bell is a stud. He’s going to be missed and we should all be praying for a healthy recovery.

Nebraska volleyball sweeps the spring match

The storyline of Harper Murray hung over the Nebraska volleyball spring game, but there were still plenty of bright spots as the Cornhuskers cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Denver, in Kearney, by the scores of 25-13, 25-12, 25-15.

Lindsey Krause, who was making her return from injury,  led the Huskers with 12 kills, two digs, and a .417 hitting percentage. Merritt Beason was spectacular as usual, with 10 kills, four blocks, three digs, and two aces. Freshman Sykler Pierce also wowed in her debut with 10 kills and a .389 hitting percentage.

Andi Jackson also stood out with seven kills and three blocks. Bergen Reilly notched 20 assists in the win for the Cornhuskers who went 19-1 last season on their way to being national runner-up. As far as Murray, John Cook said it was, “Out of his hands” and that the focus was finishing the spring semester.

Big wins on the diamond for the Nebraska Cornhuskers

Following a 7-3 win over Minnesota on Saturday, thanks to a four-run eighth inning, the Nebraska baseball team is now tied for first in the Big Ten at 30-14 overall and 12-5 in conference play.

Joshua Overbeek had a big day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Josh Caron added three hits, while Dylan Carey had two hits, a double, plus an RBI. Mason McConnaughey notched his sixth win of the season (6-3) after allowing just one run and seven hits in just over five innings of work.

Nebraska will go for the sweep on Sunday. The first pitch goes out at 1 p.m. CST.

In softball, the Nebraska Cornhuskers notched an 8-3 win over the Gophhers, which clinched a first-round bye in the Big Ten tournament. Sydney Gray had five RBI in the win for the Huskers which included a three-run home run. Sarah Harness got the win in the circle.
