Kirby Smart Says College Football ‘Needs to Be Fixed’ After Crushing FSU
USA TODAY Sports

The Georgia Bulldogs have ended the last two seasons by etching their names into history. The Bulldogs pulled off historic blowouts of TCU (65-7) and Florida State (63-3) in their two postseason appearances. The drubbing of the Seminoles in the Orange Bowl was the largest margin of victory ever in a bowl game in college football.

With that being said, the results were obviously skewed with the number of players missing from FSU's sideline in South Florida. In fact, it might've been easier to count the number of Seminoles who were available rather than trying to come to terms with the amount of talent out of the lineup.

Florida State was without at least 30 members of its roster, including 20 players who were listed on the two-deep. The team also had multiple starters go down during the course of the game as wide receiver Kentron Poitier, offensive tackle Darius Washington, and cornerback Fentrell Cypress II were all sidelined by halftime.

Following the contest, Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart was pleased with the victory against the Seminoles but noted that something has to change in college football moving forward. These types of blowouts are becoming more and more common in the sport in the NCAA Transfer Portal and opt-out era.

"Let me say something, and maybe I'm wrong here and maybe this will be a bad sound-byte, but people need to see what happened tonight and they need to fix this. It needs to be fixed," Smart said after the game. "It's very unfortunate that they, who have a good football team and a good football program, are in the position they're in."

"Everybody can say it's their fault and it's their own problem, all right, and everybody can say we had our guys and they didn't have our guys. I can listen to all that," Smart continued. "But college football has got to decide what they want, and I know things are changing. I know things are going to change next year. You know what, there's going to still be bowl games outside of those. People got to decide what they want and what they really want to get out of it because it's really unfortunate for those kids on that sideline that had to play in that game that didn't have their full arsenal, and it affected the game 100 percent."

Florida State, specifically, had its roster decimated in large part due to the fallout from the College Football Playoff snub. There's no doubt that a majority of the departures wouldn't have taken place if the program was currently fighting for a national championship. Instead, the Seminoles were turned into a shell of themselves thanks to the decision of 13 people in a conference room.

As for the fix, there's no easy answer that would satisfy the wishes of all parties. With that being said, the month of December as it currently stands is simply insane with the combination of the Early Signing Period, transfer portal, and bowl games all crunched into a short span. It's not an easy period for coaches or players with so many decisions to be made so quickly.

Georgia has won 30 of its last 31 games, including back-to-back National Championships. The Bulldogs have come out on top in their last five postseason appearances.

The defeat in the Orange Bowl snapped Florida State's 19-game winning streak, the second-longest in program history. The Seminoles were able to achieve a 13-1 record with wins over LSU, Miami, and Florida while winning the ACC Championship for the first time in nine years.
