Bob Stoops tells Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz to 'break free from the family business'

As Iowa looks ahead to a Week 3 clash with Nevada, it's time to add another log to the fire that's burning under offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz's seat.

Ferentz, son of head coach Kirk Ferentz, has been the offensive coordinator at Iowa since 2017. His father has been head coach of the Hawkeyes since 1999.

Iowa football is a family business, apparently, but business hasn't been good -- especially offensively.  It's been a strange season so far for the Hawkeyes, to say the least. This is a team that has more punts this season than points in two games.

Iowa won its first game of the season 7-3 after the defense pitched in with two safeties. Iowa's punter racked up more yards in that game (479) than the offense (166).

Perhaps things would feel a bit different in Iowa if they didn't just lose to their arch-rival, the Iowa State Cyclones, in a game in which they passed for only 92 yards and went 3-of-11 on third downs. Perhaps things would be different if this was something new in Iowa. The problem is, despite consistently having one of the best defenses in college football on a yearly basis, Iowa's offense under Brian Ferentz has been basically anemic.

Some may a change is needed in Iowa City. In this instance, "some" is code for legendary Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops.

Stoops was somehow coerced or tricked into making a cameo for Ferentz, and it's hilariously and somehow wholesomely accurate.

"Bob Stoops here saying hi. Listen, I know you've had a tough couple of two-three years there, but the good news is your family still supports you, buddy. Especially your dad, he wants you to know that," Stoops said.

"Even though everyone else seems to be against you sometimes the best advice is to break free from the family business, man. Go do what you got to do."

Stoops finished his message to the embattled offensive coordinator with "a big Boomer Sooner and good luck".

Like I said, it's been a strange season so far for the Hawkeyes.
