Report: Retired Syracuse coaching legend makes plans for 2023-24 season

The 78-year-old retired from his longtime gig with the Orange in March following 47 seasons. He is currently serving as a Special Assistant to the Athletic Director at the university.

Boeheim officially joined Syracuse in 1962 as a student and member of the men's basketball team. Following two seasons as a graduate assistant, Boeheim served as an assistant coach for eight years before taking over as the head coach in 1976.

The four-time Big East Coach of the Year led the Orange to a 1,116-440 record, 35 NCAA Tournament appearances, five Finals Fours and a National Championship in 2003.

According to a report from CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein, "there is no timetable on an official announcement" for Boeheim's new role.

Rothstein added that Boeheim's gig with ESPN is "expected to include work on both games and studio," while his job with Westwood One "could" include "some additional games during Championship Week."

Given Boeheim's long-known reputation of being a "grumpy curmudgeon" of sorts, hearing him provide analysis during games should be interesting to say the least.

The 2005 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee's old team will tip off their 2023-24 season at 7 p.m. ET on Nov. 6 against the University of New Hampshire.
